Over the years, th...Holiday of Hanukkah (part two)

Over the years, the menorah has evolved to represent more than a candelabra. It has become a symbol of Judaism, and is even used on some Israeli coins. Still, the history of the menorah is largely unknown.

As the Jews wandered through the desert after the Exodus from Egypt, Bezalel made the first menorah as a symbol of the spiritual light spread by G-d. It is described in the Torah as having six branches and a seventh branch to light them. Chanukiot (plural of Chanukiah) have eight branches to commemorate the eight days of Hanukkah, with a ninth branch -- called a "shamash" -- to light them. Modern usage of the word "menorah" refers to both the seven- and nine-candle designs. In truth, the Talmud only requires a minimum of one candle each night of Hanukkah; lighting additional candles for each successive night is purely a custom.

The menorah itself has given rise over the centuries to several Hanukkah customs -- and like the menorah, their origins are not commonly known. For instance, families traditionally eat potato pancakes ("latkes") and jelly doughnuts ("sufganiyot") during Hanukkah. The fried food is a reminder of the oil that provided the Miracle of Lights. And while Jews exchange gifts on Hanukkah, it is a misconception that Hanukkah is the "Jewish Christmas." In fact, the custom originated from the Jewish practice of "tzedakah," or charity. The Talmud instructs every Jew to light a candle on Hanukkah, and those that cannot afford a candle are required to go "knocking on doors" until they have raised enough. The Talmud also instructs Jews to give charity to those in need and to preserve their dignity at the same time. It is said that the custom of giving Hanukkah gelt arose from the need to shelter poor people from the shame of begging.

Holidays preserve the memory of significant events, and traditions continue the practice of cherished values. Hanukkah is a time for family, celebration and joy -- and also a time for remembering the reasons for celebrating. The light of the Hanukkah candles is a reminder of past miracles, and of the continuing pursuit of peaceful Jewish ideals.

http://www.galleryjudaica.com/hanukkah-menorah-hanukah.aspxWhite Buffalo Calf Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13272264200755227853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4552527390733540756.post-83032006297088120822011-12-21T03:51:05.690-08:002011-12-21T03:51:05.690-08:00Holiday of Hanukkah (part one)

Hanukkah is not described in scripture, and it does not have the religious significance of Passover, Sukkot, Shavuot, Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur. Still, the celebration of Hanukkah, the history behind its traditions, and the symbolism of the Menorah reinforce the basic tenets of Judaism: dedication, perseverance, generosity and remembrance.

Several generations after Alexander the Great, Antiochus IV inherited control of the Greek empire, which included Israel at the time. Where Alexander had allowed cultures to practice their own religions and customs, Antiochus tried to Hellenize the Jews. He placed a Greek priest in the Holy Temple, who desecrated the altar by demanding that pigs be sacrificed upon it. Jews were oppressed, even massacred, but when pressured to abandon their heritage and beliefs, Mattathias the Hasmonean and his son Judah Maccabee chose to revolt. A battle ensued. The Jews were outnumbered by the Greek army, which used armored elephants in their attack, but the Jews won the battle and reclaimed the Holy Temple. The word "Hanukkah," which means dedication, refers to the rededication of the Holy Temple, at which time the menorah was lit.

The victory was the first miracle of Hanukkah, but the Talmud also tells of a second. In the temple was a menorah, a candelabra that was to be lit every day with purified oil. But the Greeks had defiled all of the oil, except for a single flask, which was enough for one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight days while more of the purified oil could be produced. This miracle is commonly referred to as the Miracle of Lights, and it is celebrated each year during Hanukah, when candles are lit every night for eight days.White Buffalo Calf Womanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13272264200755227853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4552527390733540756.post-11190412280660250472011-12-21T03:49:03.116-08:002011-12-21T03:49:03.116-08:00Thank you Holiness David for finding this article ...Thank you Holiness David for finding this article to share. But so many, they don't really, think that G_ah_d (utterance of heavenly transmission) will bring, the heart that rings. And we are satisfied, to long for better skies, rather than trusting all the ones who came before us. It's time of prophecy, the living of all the devoted seas (blue tzitzit), and what could bring us home, we don't look at this loom (weaving of light and dark). It's a covering, the prayer cloth that helps us discover, that we are housing a truth, and it's called our soul. There is wisdom if we trust our heart's breath, the sanctity of loving all that is truth. But who can you depend on, when so many think they know lawns (green grass the home of paradise) and you don't know which way to turn? There's only one place, that speaks volumes, it's the prayer you turn to, that leads you true. Look at your heart inside, not at your pride outside, but bring the soul, that knows, the way to go. And when we follow you and me, and gift all, to the leaves (tree of life, our relatives who we share life with), then we know where we must go, on it's course of time. Let's not be blind any more, but instead let's find vision of a stare, where our hearts show us the way, with good old fashion love in the air. And it's where we need find, the song that leads us this time, to unite our hearts, to fight for broken hearts. There is wind in the clouds. There is flowing of the blood, but there is not wisdom that grows, with all the lies. Instead, let's hold each others hands, and feed all who do command, the soul of wisdom, the soul of pride (faith and humbleness), that offers us the ride. It's heaven inside. It's the grains of delight (abundance for all). It's where G_ad_d promises us paradise. Give your embrace to the world. Feed the homeless and the full. Open your hearts and give it all away. Brotherhood comes with a price, and we'd better think twice, because only love will allow us to survive. Ironically, Syria was interested in reviving Aramaic, but stopped it because they thought Aramaic was copying from the Hebrew (Israeli) script. Clearly they didn't know Hebrew copied it from Aramaic originally.Aramaic Scholarhttp://allthingsaramaic.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4552527390733540756.post-61733706407003370522010-01-07T04:46:25.751-08:002010-01-07T04:46:25.751-08:00House of the beloved
